Krakower Group Songwriter Spotlight: Parry Gripp

Parry Gripp

Today, we are excited to spotlight Songwriter Parry Gripp, who is nominated for a Daytime Emmy for the song “I’m Not Very Nice,” sung by Kelly Osbourne on Disney XD’s popular hit series ‘The 7D.’ He is also in the band Nerf Herder.

What influences has music had on your family?

My dad, an orchid farmer, loved the march music of John Philip Sousa, and would march around the house to it. He frequently said that they should have speakers all over town playing march music so that people would get more done. My mom took my sister and I to see the broadway musical review “Beatlemania” 31 times (some would say that she was overly indulgent).

If you could travel to any period based on the music, when would you go?

My favorite period of music is for 1965-to 1981. I would most likely travel to 1978 and see the Ramones, DEVO, and Judas Priest.

Who are your Influences?

I like to listen to current pop radio just to hear the styles. I don’t pay too much attention to who it is doing the song.

I’m a fan of all kinds of music, and I love so many songs it is hard to pick. My favorite songwriters are Chuck Berry, Shel Silverstein (who wrote “A Boy Named Sue”), and Ray Davies from the Kinks.

 What’s your composing method?

I like to swim, and I come up with a lot of my ideas while swimming. I like to pace around and work on the ideas in my head. I never think of anything good while sitting down.

When did you discover that you wanted to pursue music?

I never pursued it as more than a hobby for fun, stumbled into it as a career. Initially, I started a band just to a have an excuse to hang out with other people in bands. It was never intended to be very serious.

What makes your sound unique?

I’m not a great musician, so I have to be inventive in how I play things.

How did you first get involved writing music? What challenged you most, and what rewarded you most, as your résumé evolved over the years?

After my band Nerf Herder took a break, I started goofing around writing short songs for my YouTube channel. These became popular enough that I began to get offers for advertising and TV work. Most people know me through my YouTube songs, such as “Raining Tacos”, “Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom”, and “Chimpanzee Riding A Segway”.

What do you do to get away from it all?

What do you like doing outside of the studio? I like to walk on the beach and look at tide pools. It’s a great distraction! Like watching YouTube, but all of of the videos are about crabs.

Best concert or musical appearance you’ve ever seen?

My band’s first tour was opening for Weezer on their Pinkerton tour. I was a huge fan at the time, and watching them play every night was incredible! The clubs were pretty small, so it was intimate, and they were great.
