Today we are excited to spotlight Composer Matthew O’Halloran. His latest projects include ‘The New Romantic’ which will screen during the 2018 SXSW Film Festival.
Biggest non-musical influences?
Film, NBA basketball, travelling alone.
If you could travel to any period based on the music when would you go?
I was a teen when the grunge wave was at it’s peak and I loved every second of it. But if I had to choose, probably the motown era. I think it’s hard to grasp how powerful that movement was if you didn’t grow up around it.
What makes your sound unique?
I think mostly my background in music. There’s no technical or classical foundation it’s mostly just ear. So if I make a decision it’s never based on theory or training. I guess it’s just based on taste and past experience. I try and take as much influence from contemporary music as I take from other composers. I think composers like Thomas Newman, Gustavo Santaolalla, Yann Tiersen, are all brilliant but on the other end I think artists like Bjork, Wu-Tang, Radiohead for example, are at the same level of genius. I just try and soak up as much as I can.
